It’s Senior Citizens Day!

Today we celebrate the people who are part of the fastest-growing demographic in the world. In 1950 there were 200 million people over 60 years old – by 2000 that number had tripled to nearly 600 million and by 2025 it is estimated that there will be over 1 billion older persons.

How to celebrate Senior Citizens Day

There are a number of ways you can help celebrate Senior Citizens Day:

  • Set aside your time. Spend time with senior family members or friends. Treat them by taking them to a favourite restaurant, movie or other place they enjoy.
  • Start a family history project.Interview older loved ones about their memories and experiences. This gives them an opportunity to share their wisdom and advice aswell as providing a unique chance to start collecting old family stories and photographs.
  • Get cooking. Bake a cake or cook a meal for an elderly person who may have no family to visit them.
  • Put your helpers hat on. If you know an older person living close by, offer them a hand with their gardening, housework or washing their car.
  • Volunteer. Volunteer your time at a nursing home or an assisted living community. Many older people would love someone to share lunch with or have a simple chat.
  • Practice random acts of kindness. Send a personal note of thanks to an older adult who has made a positive impact on your life. Handwritten cards are a favourite.

So show your appreciation today for Senior Citizens Day and also try to carry out these tips throughout the year. Also, if you are a senior citizen yourself, enjoy your day of appreciation!
